Groeten: The Kings Speech

Er staat:

Hope you saw the coronation Glad it passed of A.I. So much for the bets, and the busmen. I would love to have been there but hope to hear the Kings speech Just starting hom after having a nice day. Cheerio ..

Afzender had zijn of haar 'nice day' in Bournemouth in mei 1937. In de stempel is alleen de maand, 'MAY', nog te lezen. Moet na de twaalfde geweest zijn, de dag van de 'coronation'.

Ik heb zo gauw niet kunnen achterhalen wat de afzender bedoelt met de 'Kings speech'. Die uit de film (nog niet gezien) ging volgens mij over de naderende oorlog en dateert van 4 september 1939. Kennelijk was er ook nog een coronation speech.

De 'busmen' staakten op coronation day:

In the build-up to the coronation of George VI in May 1937, London's 26,000 busmen went on strike. They wanted shorter hours and better conditions, as well as an inquiry into the dangers to their health of the new larger buses, which travelled at a dizzying 30mph instead of just 12mph.* 

De 'bets' zullen wel gegaan zijn over de goeie afloop, 'coronation' dan wel 'speech'.
